The American Heart Association’s Kids/Teens Cook With Heart is an interactive, educational program designed to improve children’s nutritional choices and diets – as an important part of improved cardiovascular health – through engaging them in healthy cooking classes.

This grant-funded position is responsible for coordinating the American Heart Association’s Kids/Teens Cook With Heart initiative at elementary, middle and high schools for students in grades 4-12. This includes coordinating the logistics of the program and working with the project coordinator to manage all aspects of the program including the volunteer chefs and the relationships with the participating schools and other community programs. Additionally, in collaboration with the Mission Advancement staff, actively works to secure funding for the program’s expansion.

This is an ideal position for a community-oriented professional with experience and interest in promoting health and wellness - especially with youth - and who has a knack for detailed program management.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage Kids/Teens Cook With Heart curriculum and recipes. May supply recipes provided they adhere to American Heart Association guidelines.

  • In collaboration with Mission Advancement staff, identify and cultivate new donors for the program, and raise additional funds for expansion of the program.

  • Establish and manage relationships with existing and new schools as program expands.

  • Establish and manage relationships with school district superintendents across Maui (collaborating with local staff and Youth Market Team).

  • Establish and mange relationships with other community partners as they relate to the program.

  • Conduct cooking demonstrations in conjunction with other AHA programs and projects.

  • Recruit new chef instructors as needed for expansion of the program. Work with chef instructors to provide instruction on food preparation, cooking and presentation as well as to monitor safety and sanitation practices to ensure all program participants follow proper standards and procedures.

  • Manage the planning, budgeting and purchasing of all food needed for class instruction.

  • Organize student lessons and in-class activities. Assign in-class volunteer tasks.

  • Maintain equipment needed for use in each class.

  • Maintain all program expenses and evaluate program progress and results to ensure the program is managed within budget.

  • Create and maintain reports, including photo documentation, to demonstrate fulfillment of program goals and objectives.

  • Collaborate and integrate with division and affiliate-wide departments to support and fulfill the goals and mission of the American Heart Association.

  • Perform other duties as needed to ensure achievement of overall goals in the most effective way possible.

Required Experience

  • Fundraising experience with ability to inspire personal connections with our mission.

  • Knowledge of nutrition. Experience with health promotion and education in schools preferred.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and multiple priorities. Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with others, plan work, organize time and maintain efficient workflow. Anticipate needs of the program and make suggestions for work flow.

  • Ability to work within a team environment and interact with staff, volunteers, and the public both individually and in group settings.

  • Ability to take ownership of projects and see them through to completion.

  • Ability to function independently with minimal supervision.

  • Strong oral and written communications and interpersonal skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Ability to travel to class locations, have access to reliable transportation and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurance.

  • Satisfactory completion of a background check that includes verification of criminal records, motor vehicle records and pre-employment credit history.
