The American Heart Association has an opportunity for a research intern on our Health Care by Food team. The American Heart Association’s Health Care by Food™ initiative is addressing barriers to the widespread adoption of healthy food as a treatment for acute and chronic disease and the health inequities that result.

The ultimate aim of the initiative is to improve health in cost-effective ways through evidence-based food is medicine interventions that are covered by private and public health insurance and accessible to the millions of people in America living with or at high risk for acute and chronic health conditions. The research intern will support the needs of the Health Care by Food team in a variety of ways, described below.

Internship Overview:

  • Time Commitment: 25 hours per week

  • Internship Duration: 9/9/24 – 12/6/24

  • Location: Remote

  • Salary: $23.00 per hour

Reporting to the Senior Program Lead for Health Care by Food, our intern will conduct research assessments, landscape analyses and support the development of key strategic and communications materials across the initiative, including but not limited to program reporting metrics, collation of materials for an online "knowledge hub”, and other support needs for initiative strategic goals.

Research & Analysis

  • Conduct research on trends and science in the Food Is Medicine field; discover resources relevant to the field.

  • Support thought leadership and publication opportunities with supplementary research and citations.

Writing & Strategy

  • Draft strategic updates for key stakeholders.

  • Help structure and prepare annual reports and other programmatic reporting requirements.

  • Collate and synthesize information across initiative pillars into relevant takeaways for key stakeholders.

  • Assist in content creation for website, internal communications, and external communications.

Confidentiality and Ethics

  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion and professionalism.


  • Candidates who are seniors or graduate students pursuing a degree in Public Health Policy, Journalism, Communications, or other Research intense major/background with an interest in science.

  • Research skills - An ability to do “deep dives” in the field of food is medicine.

  • Strong analytical skills, comfortable with qualitative and quantitative data.

  • Problem solving and critical thinking.

  • Ability to work independently and professionally in a corporate environment and assume responsibility for completing projects from inception through final results.

  • A highly motivated self-starter who creates opportunity does not wait for direction, is highly organized and operates with limited management – this role must be resourceful.

  • Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

  • Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection.

  • Availability of 25hrs/wk, M-F within the 8:30am-5:00pm work day.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
