Due to the current pandemic, all AHA offices are closed and staff are currently working from home. While offices are closed, daily travel is minimal and voluntary. There is no overnight travel currently.
Offices will be reopening October 11, 2021. On this date the position will resume to being based in the local office and work will continue in the field with donors, volunteers and partners as the job requires.
The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Communications Manager for Health Equity Communications Operations . The location for this position is flexible ( remote/home-officed .
In this role, you will be responsible for implementation of annual strategic Marketing Communications and tactical plans for Health Equity. As well as garnering relevant data for measurement, evaluation and refinement of the plans toward achievement of shared goals and objectives. Responsible for supporting the development of Health Equity MarCom assets in collaboration with Integrated Marketing, Consumer Health and the Office of Health Equity and executing MarCom deliverables for corporate sponsors, donors and funders. Leads the development and distribution of internal communications, including Field Integration Materials, under the direction and in collaboration with the Director of Health Equity Communications. Supports media relations goals by leveraging internal and external resources, including volunteer experts, agencies and Corporate Communications.
Essential Job Duties:
Creates communications plans and materials to promote equitable health programs and sponsor objectives to maximize content, events, volunteers, and information.
Supports media relations through actively pitching media and managing inquiries and identifies and coordinates appropriate volunteer experts, aligning with communications and businss leads, drafting and running approvals for media materials, including but not limited to key messages and FAQs.
Comprehensive understanding of multicultural media and the role of digital media to strategize for effective, relevant coverage and implementation.
Collaborates with AHA’s regional communications staff by developing and sharing tools to drive local year-round coverage and support for the organization’s Health Equity goals.
Responsible for hands-on tactical execution with input and collaboration from Consumer Health, the Office of Health Equity and Integrated Marketing teams and agencies when appropriate.
Liaises with Public and Media Relations Science News team to integrate AHA science news with consumer messages/proposals related to health equity topics when appropriate.
Monitors, tracks, reports and measures against objectives and as requested for senior, executive and volunteer leadership.

Bachelor's Degree Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or related area
Five (5) years of extensive knowledge of consumer-focused public relations/media relations, marketing and advertising
Two (2) years of successful public relations and media relations placements
Four (4) years of experience developing and implementing focused marketing or communications campaigns
Four (4) years of experience with proven ability to develop newsworthy ideas, write and pitch stories to media outlets
Experience developing and implementing communications tactics that demonstrate equity and inclusion for reaching multicultural audiences
Experience in marketing, communications, or media relations in a large organization
