The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for a Special Projects Manager, Youth Council for our National Volunteerism Team.

The National Youth Leadership Council Project Manager is responsible for managing activities, engagement, and outcomes for the Association’s National Youth Leadership Council (Youth Council) and related activities that amplify youth voice nationally and across the Association. The National Youth Council Manager is a direct report of the National Senior Volunteerism Lead and supports the American Heart Association in elevating youth voice in program design and a variety of other projects.

The Manager will work collaboratively within the Volunteerism department and cross-functionally across the Association with, but not limited to, cross functional teams such as School Engagement, Field Development, Community Impact, Advocacy, Consumer Health and ECC. The Manager will work to maximize relationships with other organizations and clubs to build engagement in the high school and college space with high impact, relevant, best in class volunteer experiences.

Responsibilities

NATIONAL YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

  • Provide development, management, guidance and coordination of the National Youth Leadership Council

  • Manage the processes for recruitment, application, and selection of Youth Council members

  • Serve as a liaison to region/local market/national leaders across the Association to build awareness, facilitate recruitment processes, select and offer ongoing support to Youth Council members

  • Establish and maintain strong positive developmentally appropriate relationships with youth and young adults so that they can successfully serve on the Youth Council.

  • Coordinate and facilitate virtual and in-person activities related to the Youth Council.

  • Work closely with other key stakeholders in the high school and college space including Portfolio Leads working with HBCUs, HSIs, School Engagement, organizational alliances and University Relations and Recruitment Director etc. to lead Youth Council members in the design and development of service-learning projects and opportunities with clear goals and system for measuring impact.

  • Lead Youth Council members in the design and development of a formalized recognition process for youth volunteers. Work with local, region and national stakeholders.

  • Assist in designing and implementing listening sessions and other events that elevate the voices of youth volunteers from diverse backgrounds.

  • Work with Youth Council members to advise on social media engagement strategies.

  • Provide support on community collaboration opportunities.

  • Prepare fact sheets, overviews and other documents that inform stakeholders of the purpose and activities of the Youth Council

TRACKING AND REPORTING

  • Compile summary information on progress, provides briefings and other updates to team members and stakeholders across the network

  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate program notes, records and related information about Youth Council applicants and membership, including representation – demographics, geographic, agency size, program experiences etc.

  • Work in partnership with the data and insights group and others in the to evaluate the impact and effectiveness of the Youth Council, High School and College Heart Clubs and related youth voice efforts with KPIs.

  • Track Heart Club inquiries, applications, registrations and rosters

  • Capture CRM information and manage reporting to the field

OPERATIONS

  • Reply to inquiries from high school and college students to effectively match interests with the best engagement opportunity

  • Develop training and webinar experiences for Heart Club students and advisors, national kick offs, orientations, virtual recognition ceremonies etc.

  • Work with team to develop Heart Club back to school kits and merchandise, graduation cords, and licensed vendors addressing legal and brand team needs

  • Develop and implement year end survey, share key learnings to drive year to year improvements

  • Gather best practices

  • Develop SOPs, best practices and keep year-round internal calendar, ensuring key stakeholders involved

  • Manage background checks/youth protection training if needed, as off campus events would be considered Association events

  • Manages related and other duties as assigned in support of department and business needs

EVENTS

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Youth Council members as they participate in activation events, speaking engagements, fundraising, advocacy or other Association events to ensure that they have appropriate information in advance, support for logistics and preparation for their roles.

  • Coordinate and manage relationships other departments especially Communications and Development teams with relation to engaging Youth Council members as influencers, thought leaders and alongside the CEO and Association National/Region Boards and Emerging Leaders Council.

YOUTH VOICE ACTIVITIES

  • Design and organize panel discussions that elevate youth voice across the Association, incorporate youth as panelists where appropriate in thought leadership opportunities, and build awareness of the needs, concerns and aspirations of youth and young adults

  • Attend and support internal and external convenings, learning circles and other partnership events that increase awareness of and build capacity to incorporate youth voice.

  • Manages related and other duties as assigned in support of department and business needs

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience.

  • Four (4) years of relevant volunteerism experience ( Preferred area: High school and/or college student focused )

  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience and/or training in project management, youth development programs, youth leadership, or youth social-emotional development, or related areas

  • Two (2) to five (5) years of the following experience:

  • Experience managing programs that empower youth and young adults as co-designers and advocates.

  • Experience with managing and facilitating youth-led experiences (webinars, listening sessions processes, etc.) and maintaining alignment with organizational priorities and deadlines.

  • Consistent record in managing through complex issues with various stakeholders to desired outcome.

  • Ability to be solutions-focused and proactive in managing complex projects and sensitive stakeholder relationships.

  • Demonstrates initiative, creativity and innovation.

  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to develop trusting relationships in a remote environment.

  • Highly organized in approach, with ability to set and manage priorities.

  • Strong proficiency in desktop software, including Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google docs, and Canva.

  • Ability to work independently and remotely in achieving results consistently on deadline.

  • Excellent team working skills; ability to collaborate cross-functionally.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent coaching and facilitator skills
