The American Heart Association’s Internship Program provides college students an opportunity for hands-on experience in various facets for individuals interested in gaining work experience with a non-profit, voluntary health organization.
Under close supervision and mentorship of experienced public health professionals, students will apply classroom learning to practical problems. Throughout this process, students will develop and strengthen skills such as research methods, health communication, and community engagement. Students will enhance their existing abilities by learning strategies to improve health outcomes in diverse communities by conducting health education workshops, developing, and implementing outreach strategies to specific racial ethnic minority communities, and creating culturally competent resources that can be applied by these communities to prevent or manage cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and stroke.

Internship Overview:
Time Commitment: 25 hours per week
Internship Duration: 5/22/2024-8/9/2024
Hybrid position. Must be located in Huntsville/Madison/ Muscle Shoals AL area. 40%-50% travel required (mileage reimbursement provided.
Salary: $23.00 per hour
Internship Outcomes:
Orient students to the principles and practices of public health planning, research administration, and evaluation.
Expand student’s understanding of public health by growing their awareness of cultural needs, and challenges of connecting resources to diverse populations.
Students will learn the benefits of strategic partnerships between healthcare professionals, businesses, and community-based organizations to improve population health.
Deepen student’s understanding of the social determinants of health such as income, education, built environment, and access to medical care.
Responsibilities
Tasks could include things like the following:
Design effective culturally appropriate written materials.
Coordinate and conduct outreach efforts.
Promote and support current events and activities throughout the region.
Assist with the collection and analysis of data related to public health research.
Establishing/maintaining strong community partnerships.
Program development and implementation.
Leadership and board support.
Qualifications
2+ years of educational or equivalent experience in health, public health, social-work courses.
Proven ability to research health topics and translate findings into actionable guidance.
Event planning experience is a plus.
Demonstrated excellence in written communication skills, including writing on health topics for promotional or educational outcomes.
Demonstrated skills in effective one-on-one and group communications and comfort with working with all levels of community leaders, volunteers, and staff.
Ability to deal professionally in a corporate or non-profit environment and assume responsibility for guiding projects and programs from inception through completion.
Effective oral, written, and presentation communication skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment managing multiple priorities involving multiple entities.
Intermediate to excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Basic knowledge of Canva or Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
Required Equipment: Reliable WiFi Connection.
Minimum availability of 20 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future. For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.
